What Is Petal Search?

How petal search works

The growth of Huawei's smartphone market dominance has made headlines over the years, so much so, that it's begun to affect geopolitics. Traditionally the smartphone market is dominated by US players Apple and Google with their app stores being the primary way for Smartphone users to access applications. Since the fallout with the US, Google pulled the ability for Huawei (who run on Android) to use their Google PLay services.

One way to maintain apps was to download APK's from unofficial sites or clone apps/transfer app files from other android devices to your Huawei, but this was not practical for the everyday user or a good user experience.

So Huawei had to make a plan, it couldn't leave its growing user base with limited access to the world of applications, and so the company made a bold move to launch its own app aggregator with a twist.

The launch of Petal Search

Instead of replicating the Google App store Huawei has gone one step further and created a custom mobile search engine, that not only the index's applications but a host of other content.

Petal Search offers search capabilities across more than 20 categories, including

  • apps,
  • news,
  • videos, images,
  • shopping,
  • flights,
  • and local business.

Search results are presented in information cards instead of simple web links, to give users instant results and useful information with just a few clicks.

Petal search is not only a text-based search but offers voice search feature is also integrated into the app, supporting English, Spanish, French, Arabic and more. These features help Petal Search meet the needs of users accustomed to an efficient and mobile-centric lifestyle. The application also wants to make it easy to transition for users who have been using apps like Siri or Ok Google.

A focus on localised results

Petal search cannot merely be another search engine if it aims to compete with Google and Bing for market share. One of its goals is to provide more accurate local data and has been working in cooperation with global and local partners. Huawei is vigorously developing local life search services, to provide users with a rich location-based and scenario-based search experience.

The intent of aggregating local data is to help user lookup for local life content; Petal Search provides users with high-quality and most popular localised information, such as personalised recommendations or nearby foods, worth visiting local attractions, and shopping discounts.
