After the grant has been canceled the beneficiary is allowed to re-apply.

  • Financial Vulnerability: Recipients are often in desperate financial situations, making them more susceptible to offers that seem too good to be true or threats that could lead to losing their only source of income.
  • Reliance on the Grant: The R350 grant may be their primary or only means of support, increasing their anxiety about losing it and making them more likely to comply with fraudulent requests out of fear.
  • Limited Awareness: Some beneficiaries may have limited access to information or digital literacy, making it harder for them to identify sophisticated scam tactics.  
  • Online Application Process: While intended for convenience, the online application and payment system can be exploited by fraudsters who create fake websites or intercept communication.  
  • Data Sharing: Scammers may try to trick beneficiaries into sharing their personal information (ID number, SASSA card details, banking details, phone number), which can then be used to access their grant money or for identity theft.  
  • Exploiting System Weaknesses: Fraudsters have been known to exploit vulnerabilities in the SASSA system to make fraudulent applications using other people's ID numbers or to divert funds to their own accounts.  

What to watch out for:

  • Requests for Personal Information: Be extremely cautious of anyone asking for your ID number, SASSA card details, PIN, or banking information, especially via phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp, or social media. SASSA will never ask for your PIN or banking details over these channels.
  • Suspicious Links: Do not click on links in messages claiming to be from SASSA unless you are absolutely sure they are from the official SASSA website (www.sassa.gov.za). Fake websites can be designed to steal your information.
  • Demands for Payment: You should never have to pay money to receive your SRD grant. Anyone asking for upfront fees or "processing costs" is a scammer.
  • Urgent or Threatening Messages: Scammers often try to create a sense of urgency or fear to make you act without thinking. Be wary of messages saying your grant will be stopped unless you take immediate action.
  • Promises of Increased Grant Amounts: Be suspicious of anyone offering to increase your grant amount in exchange for personal information or a fee.
  • Requests to Change Banking Details: Only change your banking details on the official SASSA website or at a SASSA office. Be wary of anyone instructing you to change your banking details through unofficial channels.
  • Fake SASSA Officials: Always ask for official SASSA identification if someone claiming to be a SASSA official visits your home or calls you. If you are unsure, call the SASSA helpline (0800 60 10 11) to verify their identity.
  • Messages about Suspended Grants Requiring Verification via Unofficial Links: If your grant is marked as "referred" and you receive a message with a link to verify your identity, be cautious and rather contact SASSA directly through their official channels to confirm.

  • Keep your personal information private. Never share your ID number, SASSA card details, PIN, or banking details with anyone you don't trust.
  • Ignore suspicious messages and calls. Do not respond to unsolicited requests for your personal information.
  • Verify information through official SASSA channels. If you are unsure about any communication you receive, contact SASSA directly via their toll-free helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit your nearest SASSA office.  
  • Do not use public Wi-Fi for SASSA-related activities. Public networks may not be secure.
  • Monitor your SASSA account regularly. Check for any unusual activity or changes you did not make.
  • Report any suspected fraud immediately. Contact SASSA if you think someone is trying to scam you or has accessed your grant without your permission. You can also report it to the police.
