What Are The Blockchain Domain TLDs You Can Purchase?
24 March 2022 | 1 comments | Posted by Claire Wouters in Geek Chic
Online censorship content has become a hot topic over the last three years. When we look at how social media sites and even search engines begin to show a bias to certain sources or outright ban certain voices. If you want to reach an audience on these platforms, you have to play by the rules and toe the line, and you might not be able to say what you want to say.
One of the ways around this would be to run an independent blog where you keep your controversial content or premium content for your views. They can get a taste of what is palatable by the big platforms, and you can move them to your website for the real juicy content.
Now having your own domain is fine, but it doesn't mean it can't be taken from you; hosting providers can easily shut you down if pressure is put on them, so you may want to have a backup. A website that has no hosting provider, where you don't pay fees to keep the domain, it's yours once you purchase it, and that can be done with blockchain domains.
Once you purchase a domain, you can use it either as your primary website or as a backup, as not all web browsers natively support blockchain domains.
How to purchase a blockchain domain?
First, you would need to download a wallet and create a private key for either the Ethereum network, Polygon network or Zilliqa network, depending on the chain you want to use; this could be due to fees or where you would like to resell your domain in the future.
Once you have a wallet, you can head over to Unstoppable Domains, create an account and purchase a domain starting at $5. Domain prices will vary depending on their popularity and the TLD extension you are looking to own.
The 11 domains include:
- .crypto is the original TLD that Unstoppable domains started registering domains on, and for those who are more coin agnostic
- .eth is for those who want to keep their support for the Ethereum chain
- .zil is for those who want to keep their support for the Zilliqa chain
- .blockchain for blockchain evangelists.
- .bitcoin for bitcoin users everywhere.
- .coin - easy to remember blockchain domains combined with USDC are the future of p2p payments.
- .nft for artists, collectors and fans.
- .wallet for the payment pioneers.
- .x the ultimate domain ending and username. Short. Premium. Exclusive.
- .888 for those wishing themselves and others good fortune.
- .dao for those who believe in open governance & community.
Once you've purchased your domain, it will be transferred to your Ethereum, Polygon or Zilliqa wallet, and you will have full control over it. You can use services like Unstoppable domains to build a website on your domain or set up an email address using that domain or donation addresses, but you hold that domain in your wallet at all times.
A new trading opportunity
As is the case in the traditional domain market, there are people known as domain squatters who make a living off of purchasing popular domain names and holding them waiting to resell them in the future for a higher price. In the case of traditional domains, you constantly have to renew ownership, and because of this, you have an expense you need to add to the price you are willing to sell for in the future.
When we consider blockchain domains that use a token/NFT to prove ownership, you only pay for the fees to mint it and to move it. That way, you can hold on to domains as long as you like and wait for the right price to let go of them.
Blockchain domains have started to become a popular reselling trade as people try to purchase domains they think will be needed in the future. Let's say for example facebook wanted to get into the NFT space; if you are a speculator, you may want to purchase
- facebook.crypto
- facebook.nft
- facebook.blockchain
- facebook.coin
- facebook.wallet
Then place those domains up for resale and hope another reseller wants to take it off your hands or Facebook comes along and pays you a small fortune for taking the risk on this bet.
Exploring the decentralised web
If you have purchased a decentralised domain or you want to explore domains that others have created websites for, then you can either use directories created to curate these websites or decentralised search engines. These websites will give you access not only to others websites, but any of the websites you've built on either of the domains you own, regardless of the blockchain it's on because they support Ethereum, Polygon and Zilliqa blockchains.
Reserving your domain
Now that you know how decentralised domain registration works, will you be getting one? Do you own one already? If not you can purchase one today at Unstoppable Domains.
