Choosing Between A Plumbing Change or Plumbing Repair
06 October 2019 | 0 comments | Posted by Kate Mclean in Constructive Criticism
Your home’s plumbing is one of the things determining its functionality. As such, it requires all your attention. In general, if there’s a problem, you have two suitable courses of action to choose from. First, you have the option of repairing your plumbing system, which is a quicker, more economical method of handling these issues.
Second, you have a chance to change the entire system, which is probably a better solution in the long-run (even though it might be a tad unnecessary at the moment).
All in all, here are several factors you should consider to get an answer to this question.
1. What is the state of the system in general?
When it comes to your plumbing, you need to examine the state of your plumbing system in general. The chances are that you have that one area, fixture or valve that’s quite problematic, while the rest of the system may be in a decent condition.
In this scenario, it’s far more cost-effective to repair your plumbing than to replace it entirely. However, if your plumbing is breaking quite often and if you have a problem with something else every single time, it just might be the time to replace your plumbing as a whole.
2. How old is the place?
Let’s say that you’ve just bought or inherited an old place (a house build tin 60s or 70s). The chances are that this home still has lead plumbing, as well as asbestos in various elements. This means that the replacement of your plumbing is more than mandatory for the reasons of safety.
Even if you don’t plan to keep living there, chances of successfully selling a place with one of these hazardous plumbing models are not entirely realistic. So, this is something that you need to tend to as soon as possible.
3. Consult professionals
Some believe that a commercial plumber might try to persuade you to go for a more expensive option. The flaw with this theory lies in the fact that experts specialising in plumbing services offer a wide variety of choices. This means that there’s work for them either way, which will more than motivate them to give you a straightforward and effective answer.
Keep in mind that regardless of the type of their intervention, you’ll still need some help with maintenance and subsequent repairs (although not as often). This is why associating yourself with the right agency is always a smart choice.
4. The cost
The last thing you need to understand is the fact that the price of a plumbing replacement tends to be the same. Sure, where you buy plumbing materials and which material type you opt for makes all the difference, however, there’s a margin cost that you probably won’t go under.
When it comes to the repair, it all depends on the situation, as well as whether it’s a minor or a major one. Either way, replacing your entire plumbing system is not likely to yield a positive ROI upon the resale.
In conclusion
As you can see, it’s impossible to answer this question without a broader context. It depends on your aims, your budget and the overall state of your system at the moment. While you can always make a decision based on your judgment, it’s usually for the best to consult the professionals.
Just keep in mind that their advice (even though more informed than yours) doesn’t take into consideration your long-term goals with the place or your household budget. In other words, the decision is always yours.
