Solo tips for travelling to London

Are you planning a solo trip to London? Travelling on your own is arguably one of the best ways to explore the city. It helps you change your perspectives about solo travel by allowing you to be in control of your entire journey.

You can visit any place you want; anytime you want to, and by what means you want to. But planning a solo trip can be overwhelming, mainly if it is your first time. When is the best time to visit? What are the fun places to visit in London?

How to travel on a budget and still have a memorable solo travel experience in London? Here seven tips that will make your solo trip to London fun-packed and unforgettable.

1. Pack adequately in readiness for the unpredictable London weather

The weather is one of the unpredictable things about London. Although London is undoubtedly an attractive city worth visiting, its weather can sometimes prevent you from getting your plans for the day done, especially if you aren’t prepared. Always carry your umbrella every time you leave your accommodation.

One-moment it’ll be lovely and sunny and the next, there’ll be a torrential downpour. So it’s wise to always bring an umbrella and a pair of rain boots with you every time you step out of your hotel. Also, carry well-layered outfits, and a decent scarf in case it becomes chilly and windy.

2. Explore the museums

If you’re a bit nervous about going to London alone, museums are an ideal place to visit. Start your exploration with a free walking tour in London which goes through the Sherlock Holmes Museum.

However, if you’re an avid natural history enthusiast, the Grant Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy won’t disappoint you. London has a wide array of museums, so you’ll get a museum that appeals to your interests.

3. Visit where Londoners Spend their time on weekends

While travelling alone in London, you may find yourself visiting touristy places and engaging in absolute touristy activities. But if you want to make your solo travel experience unique and budget-friendly, consider visiting sites that Londoners visit during their free time.

For instance, Eastbourne and Brighton in the Southeast of England are the perfect beach destinations for those who want to take a break from the chaos of the city.

4. Save money by staying in inexpensive parts of London and booking in advance

Booking accommodation through Airbnb is an excellent way to cut your solo travel expenses in London. It allows you to interact and spend time with the Londoners who will offer you not only brilliant insights into the city but also some valuable travel advice. Also, look for an accommodation facility that is away from the city centre.

Remember, accommodation in East London is significantly cheaper compared to Central London. Booking way ahead of time is another excellent way to save money during your solo trip to London. Booking early means more options, excellent prices, and minimal time spent queuing.

5. Head to the movies

You don’t need a company to watch a movie. So a trip to the film is a fantastic hang out activity whether you are a newbie or experienced solo traveller. Keep off the dull cinema complexes and head to one of the oldest movie theatres in London like the Barbican that shows indie and arthouse cinemas along with the latest blockbusters.

If you’re looking for a luxurious multiplex that consists of in-auditorium bars, then one of the Electric Cinemas would be a great place to start. If you’re travelling on a tight budget, then going to the Genesis Cinema would be a wise idea – tickets here begin from only £8.50.

6. Rent a bike

London is a big city, and while exploring the city on foot or by bus is great, a bike takes the experience to a whole new level. If you’re 14 years or older, you’re qualified to hire a bike. Hiring a bike can be a wise idea if you want to save money while exploring the vast city. With as little as £2, you can get a bike for 24 hours. With over 750 docking stations available in London, finding a good bike to rent isn’t a difficult task.

Fun in London

There are plenty of fun things to do in London for solo travellers. You won’t exhaust all the exciting places to visit alone. So it’s essential to plan ahead of time so that you can take maximum advantage of your time in London.
