5 Impacts of Cosmetology on Health
02 September 2021 | 0 comments | Posted by Dan Martin in Beauty Basics
We all seem to know beauty when we see it, but we find it hard to define it. It is only expressed in our heads as something pleasant and not necessarily a tangible thing. Many things can be beautiful, including fine art, landscapes, epic architecture, and faces. Most people will associate an asymmetrical face with a beautiful person.
Aesthetically pleasing surroundings can improve general wellbeing, cognitive function, behaviour, and mood. As both our brains and bodies react visibly and measurably to everything around us, beauty has a particular impact on our wellbeing. And when we make useful things beautiful, we are making them better.
Which is what cosmetology is all about. It helps maintain both physical and mental health for both the cosmetologist and their clients.
What is cosmetology?
Cosmetology is defined as the study and application of beauty treatments, including but not limited to hair styling, manicures/pedicures, cosmetics, skincare, and permanent / non-permanent hair removal.
There is a wide range of beauty treatments that students can specialize in and explore. Qualified cosmetologists can choose from various career choices, including barbers, hair stylists, beauticians, skin care specialists, and even the more technical career of being an esthetician.
But before one can be allowed to practice as a licensed esthetician, a cosmetology student must complete between 260–1500 hours of training. This is in addition to passing a written and practical exam. Depending on where you would like to work, the requirements may differ. You might want to consider an effective cosmetology practice test that would aid you in your cosmetology test preparation.
What is an esthetician?
Aesthetics or esthetics is a branch of cosmetology that deals with skincare and skincare routine. An esthetician is a trained professional who deals with skincare treatment and skincare services, including facials, hair removal, chemical peels, etc.
An esthetician is trained in timeless skincare, and they can be usually found in spas, beauty parlours, and medical offices. They also perform facials and neck massages, and facial hair removal. And although some may be known as medical estheticians, they are not medical doctors and cannot take the place of dermatologists who specialize in treating skin and hair diseases.
How long does it take to become an esthetician?
Estheticians need to undergo some training for them to be allowed to practice. This training teaches them how to care for and improve the appearance and health of the skin through non-invasive treatments.
The positive impacts of cosmetology on health
Cosmetology improves mood and raises self-esteem
How we look has an emotional impact on all of us. Beauty routines and products help improve our mood. Treating yourself to a spa day leaves you feeling relaxed and feeling good about yourself.
Having low self-esteem leads to anxiety, depression, and the development of negative coping mechanisms and behaviours. This harms our mental health.
Just having a new haircut or getting your nails done makes you feel like a different person. This gives you positive feelings and raises your self-esteem as well as your confidence.
By helping people feel better about themselves, cosmetologists also get a rewarding feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. They can grow more competent and confident in their work which enhances their self-esteem. This has a positive impact on both their professional and personal lives.
Cosmetology promotes healthy ageing
Although the term anti-ageing has been used to promote the sale of serums and lotions, in today’s technologically advanced world, anti-ageing medicine and serums also address the illnesses and disorders that come with age.
Scientific research and improved medical technologies allow detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related diseases, dysfunction, and disorders.
People are no longer using anti-ageing products to look younger; they are doing it for their overall wellness.
It relieves stress
With most chronic health issues being brought on by work-related stress, being pampered is the ultimate form of relaxation. Stress from work disrupts your sleep patterns and may cause trouble with your digestive, immune, and reproductive systems.
Facial and scalp massages are a great way to eliminate stress. The client gets to sit down and relax and let the cosmetologist take care of their needs. By the time the beauty routine is done, a customer is left feeling relaxed and feels as though they can take on the whole world.
Cosmetologists also benefit from their profession, which is a form of therapy for them. Their routines offer a coping mechanism and an escape from stress factors that are accompanied by bad habits. Being passionate in their work also plays a huge role in eliminating stress.
It improves physical health as well
Cosmetology takes care of your physical health as well as your emotional health. When a hairstylist washes your oily hair, it clears up hair irritation which can lead to scalp diseases if not taken care of properly. Some people experience hair loss due to chemicals and stress. A cosmetologist will use non-toxic and chemical-free hair products to help with hair growth and health, leaving your hair in pristine condition.
It promotes holistic health
Holistic health practices call for adopting a lifestyle that brings complete harmony and balance in all aspects of your life. As part of their beauty regimens, people have started adopting ayurvedic practices such as juice cleanses and meditation for their physical and emotional wellbeing.
These holistic beauty and health ideas from millennia ago have resurged with a vengeance and are quickly gaining traction and mainstream adoption by celebrities as well. This goes to show that beauty goes deeper than just the surface. Having peace and a healthy body makes people feel beautiful as well.
Conclusion
Cosmetologists hold the mental and physical health of their clients in their hands. More and more people are paying closer attention to skincare, haircare, and facial care routines more than ever. Cosmetology has become an important learning course with the rise of the need for beauty services.
