What To Do If You Do Not Enjoy Your Work
02 November 2021 | 0 comments | Posted by Alexandr Fallan in Talent Agents
You left the office, opened a business, and thought that now real life would begin. The reality is things don't always go to plan, and it's a learning process, everyone's journey is going to be different, and there won't be a set path for you. Having a career or a business comes with its learnings, pitfalls, pros and cons and depending on what you prefer, your way will adjust accordingly.
Eventually, we all hit the wall or reach a breaking point; as they say, all work and no play can make one dull. And a blunt tool tends not to work as well as it did when it was sharp.
The unpleasant surprise is that even your dream job can turn into a grind. Let's find out together why this happens and what to do about it.
How to know if you're on the edge
Remember, if you have ever raised your voice at your subordinates for no particular reason, experienced problems with concentration and memory, felt a complete loss of energy and felt indifferent to what you once loved.
If yes, then there is a chance that you are facing emotional burnout.
Sometimes this condition also reminds you of physical symptoms: headaches and dizziness, breathing and sleep problems, and disorders in your sex life. And burnout should be taken seriously: it can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and alcohol problems.
In 2019, the World Health Organisation included emotional burnout in the International Classification of Diseases. This condition is defined as the result of chronic stress at work that has not been successfully overcome.
The most apparent cause of the problem is excessive work to the detriment of rest. In the risk, the group are those who have forgotten what weekends and vacations are. Attempts to be irreplaceable and to manage everything at once lead to the same result. Burnout is a frequent problem of perfectionists, who sincerely but vainly want to build a perfect business without failures on the first try.
How to recover
If you are feeling the effects of burnout, be it slightly or a more aggressive version, then you need to take steps to reduce the anxiety-inducing tasks you face regularly.
Figure out what's wrong with your business
If work is sucking the life out of you, it's for a reason. You can't let things go without saying, but when you have to be vigilant 24/7, it's evident that the business is in serious trouble.
It would help if you were wary of situations where you first explain to your subordinates their tasks several times and then still have to redo their work for them. If a manager periodically helps to solve serious problems, it's okay. The keyword is "helps", and not rush to put out the fire first while the employees are holding their hands up.
If you have to do everything yourself, you may have delegation problems. For example, routines like bookkeeping or paperwork can be delegated to specially trained employees, or online accounting as a paystub, you can try to check stub email sample. At the same time, you should pay attention to building business processes. Employees' perception of the results of their work may differ from yours, hence the need to constantly double-check everything with them.
Think about whether you need your own business
The main goal of any business is profit. In some cases, when the company is not the only or primary source of income, it may have higher goals, such as social responsibility. Your business should give you the means to live a decent life or at least a moral satisfaction if money is not so important to you. But if you've been investing resources in the business for a long time and don't see any return at all, it's a reason to wonder if it's worth the effort.
There is no shame in getting rid of the source of the problems, closing the company, and going back to, for example, hiring at least for a while. It doesn't mean you're a failure or scared of responsibility. It means that you are capable of making intelligent decisions and managing your life correctly. Not everyone is born to be a businessman, and not every business is destined for success, and that's perfectly normal.
Remember that work is just a part of life.
So are recreation, hobbies, and spending time with friends. Work takes precisely as much time as you dedicate to it. Your task is to set clear boundaries beyond which business should not go in any case.
Otherwise, you risk facing burnout.
Set yourself the limits of the working day - even if they are different from what you are used to doing. The idea is that after that time, you do only personal things - go to the gym, take care of the kids or walk the dog. All the work you don't get done is moved on to tomorrow. And no, you don't have to be on call 24 hours a day so that you can turn off your messenger notifications in the evenings.
