6 Ways To Save Money When Visiting London
09 August 2023 | 0 comments | Posted by Oliver James in Hit the Road
When it comes to the cost of living in major cities throughout the world, London consistently ranks high. But it is feasible to visit London without breaking the bank!
You can see and experience the best of the city while keeping your budget under control if you do a little bit of research on money-saving ideas for London (you are at the correct place for this) and if you plan beforehand.
In London, regardless of the season, there is always something worth seeing and appreciating. You can either sigh with contentment at the breathtaking vistas of the Thames or scowl in dismay at the exorbitantly high prices.
Here are six ways to save money when visiting London to help you on your way.
1 - Get a Visitor Oyster Card
The London Underground is convenient, but it can add up quickly. The good news is that taking public transportation can help you save a lot of money. Do you want to learn how to minimise your spending while visiting London? Visitor Oyster Cards are the key.
All of London's public transportation may be accessed with a single magnetic rechargeable card called an Oyster Card. Using it is much more cost-effective than purchasing a separate ticket for each trip on the London Underground. It's a one-time purchase with unlimited lifetime use.
You can return your card for a refund of any unused funds as well as the card deposit if you won't be returning to London. When you use an Oyster card to tap into public transportation, you save money. You should use it because after 9:30 am on weekdays, the daily cost for adults is capped.
Once you've used up your daily allotment, the rest of the day's rides are on the house. The Visitor Oyster Card also features deals at a variety of local restaurants, stores, and attractions. This means you can save money while still getting cool mementoes of London.
The Emirates Air Line cable car is another attraction where the Visitor Oyster Card can save you money.
2 - Sky Garden London
Sky Garden is a great place to visit in London if you're on a budget. The name "Sky Garden" immediately conjures images of Babylon's "Hanging Garden" from long ago. The garden is a contemporary take on the traditional idea of a garden at such a great height.
Since its completion in 2014, Sky Garden has become one of London's most popular tourist destinations because of its sleek architecture and cutting-edge facilities. On weekdays, Sky Garden is one of the greatest free attractions in London. Sky Garden is located on the top floor of the "Walkie-Talkie" and is accessible by its own elevator.
After its completion, it was heralded as the city's tallest public park, including an array of terraces adorned with exotic flora, pathways, trails, rest spaces, and an observatory deck from which visitors could take in breathtaking views.
The garden's front terrace offers a breathtaking panorama of London landmarks like the Shard, St. Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, and (on a clear day) the entire West End. You can enjoy a cup of coffee at the bar or a full meal at one of the two restaurants in the garden, depending on your budget.
3 - Free Museums
Entry to the majority of London's museums are totally free, making them great places to visit. Unlike in most other cities, you can spend as little as an hour in a museum, wander in when you happen to be nearby, visit multiple museums in a single day, and circle back to a favourite later on.
The fact that London's museums are open to the public, along with free Wi-Fi, cafes, and friendly staff, is another perk. It doesn't cost anything to visit any of London's free museums, including the British Museum, the Natural History Museum, the National Gallery, the Tate Modern, and the Science Museum. There is no cost to you for this education in British history!
The Tate Modern's 10th-floor observation deck is also open to the public without charge. Keep in mind that the station closes before the museum does, so plan accordingly. Before you go, make sure the location is open.
4 - Changing of the guard
The changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace is one of the city's most well-attended shows in the city. Guards in red uniforms and bear helmets put on a fantastic performance.
The ritual occurs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and on Sundays. The ceremony of changing the guard is scheduled to begin at 11 am. The whole event takes roughly half an hour.
If you don't get there at least half an hour before the concert starts, you'll have to settle for watching it on the displays of other people's phones. The show may not go on as planned due to weather or other citywide events, so be sure to check the schedule.
5 - London Parks
Don't overlook the enchantment of London's gardens and parks. You may be familiar with the names Hyde Park, Regents Park, St. James's Park, Kensington Palace Gardens, Hampstead Heath, and Richmond Park from their appearances in fiction.
You can take a stroll with your coffee, enjoy a picnic, and watch the hundreds of squirrels that inhabit the area. There are even deer in Richmond Park. That's why it makes sense that park entry is completely free. Some public gardens, however, have the appearance of a private estate.
Consider the mysterious Phoenix Garden, located in the heart of London's West End. This, however, is a freely accessible public space, a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city.
6 - Plan Ahead
If you're visiting the UK capital on a tight budget, it's a good idea to get organised and map out your plan before you arrive. To avoid draining your bank account, mix in some inexpensive activities with your free ones, and always book in advance to save money on items like theatre tickets.
Now that you know how to save money and experience London like a local, you can begin planning your trip. You can unwind and take in the amazing sights of London without breaking the bank.
