Why Are People Switching To A Sim Only Plan?

23 August 2022 | 0 comments | Posted by Dea Muric in Geek Chic

Switch to sim only plans

More than half of the world’s population has access to mobile phones, and you cannot use a mobile phone to its full capacity without subscribing to a phone plan. Your mobile phone has a little card in it called a SIM card. This card provides you with your phone number and makes it possible for your phone to connect to the mobile phone networks.

Recently, so many people have been migrating to sim-only plans, and there are good reasons for the massive switch. Before we look at those reasons, let us know what a sim-only plan is all about. What is a sim-only plan?

Maybe you have been wondering what a SIM-only plan is and whether you should go with everyone who is switching to such a plan. Here is all you need to know about it. A sim-only deal or plan is a type of monthly contract that a service provider offers.

In this plan, you only pay for the minutes, texts, and data that you use on the SIM card. You only get the SIM card, and it doesn’t come with a phone, hence the name SIM-only.

Now, this offer usually comes way cheaper because you do not have to pay for a handset. You can put the SIM card in a phone that you already own, which has been unlocked to read any SIM card, not only the one you bought with the phone. Here are the reasons why there is a massive switch to this plan.

You get to save money

When you go for a SIM-only plan, you can choose to buy your handset up front, and you can purchase any phone you like. This is one of the main reasons people are switching to this plan. They don’t get bound by having to buy the phone that comes with a service provider.

If you already have a handset that you love, then you can save money by just inserting your SIM card into your existing handset. However, you need to be sure that your handset can read other sims apart from the one that came with it unless, of course, you bought an unlocked phone.

If your phone is locked to a SIM card, then you may need to have it unlocked to be able to work with a SIM-only plan.

Makes it easier to upgrade your phone

The benefit of a SIM-only deal is that you get to upgrade your phone anytime you want. Usually, an average mobile contract can last around two years. Of course, that is a very long period to have new technologies in mobile phones swimming around.

Apple, Samsung, Sony, and HTC would have released several versions of their phones in two years, and you will definitely crave to have one of those. A SIM-only deal makes this dream of having the latest mobile phone possible since you are not tied to one contract. So, you can go for a phone upgrade whenever you want.

Freedom to choose any provider

Since you have a phone that can take any SIM card, you can choose to go for another service provider if the current one isn’t favourable to you in any way. SIM-only contract deals mean that you are not in any way tried to any one provider.

For example, if you travel abroad, you can easily buy another SIM card over there and still use the same phone you have always had. All you need to do is to subscribe to another sim-only contract that will see that you do not overspend just because you are outside your country. Most sim-only contracts last for only 30 days. If you don’t like the deal, you are free to swap.

It can serve a dual purpose

A SIM-only plan can come in handy when you need separate personal and business mobile phones. All you need to do is to purchase a dual-SIM phone. With a dual-SIM handset, you can use two SIM-only cards on one device and, in so doing, achieve your aim of having different phone numbers for work and for personal use without having to carry two phones around. Such an easy option.

Final word

Though many people are switching to SIM-only plans, the decision to choose a phone contract deal or the former lies with you. It depends on how much you have to spare for a phone, what you really need the phone for, or how comfortable you are with your current phone. If you do not have too much to spare, then it is best you go for a SIM-only deal as it is confirmed to help you save money.
