Chat GPT – What Is All The Fuss about?

09 May 2023 | 0 comments | Posted by Chloe Becker in Geek Chic

What is the hype around chatGPT all about?

It is no secret that modern software can offer people many options, regardless of the nature of every person's needs. There is software for anything your heart desires or your mind can think up; if it hasn't, you can be sure someone is working on it. Today our lives are run by software, and we can't go a day without interacting with some form of technology.

Today, we have software that handles anything from the most mundane, like giving us detailed two-week weather forecasts with a click of a button, to software that can tell you exactly where a plane is flying. Then there is also software like Bitcoin that allows you to instantly send money to anyone without even having to check your bank details.

As the technological race continues, we're seeing new and improved methods of using hardware and software to solve human problems and drive more automation. While there are millions of projects and businesses focusing on just that, none have made more headlines than AI language models.

The latest global trend is personified by none other than Chat GPT, a query-answering AI, which seems to be a little bit like the Google engine, but it has gotten people all excited about its capabilities.

What are AI language models?

AI language models are a type of machine learning model designed to generate human-like text. They learn to predict the probability of a word given the previous words used in the text. This allows them to generate sentences and even whole paragraphs that are coherent, contextually relevant, and often indistinguishable from those written by humans.

There are a variety of AI language models, including rule-based systems, statistical methods, and neural networks. However, the most advanced language models today, like GPT-3 and GPT-4 from OpenAI, are based on a type of neural network called a transformer.

AI language models are trained on diverse internet text and data sets. However, because they are only trained on text, they cannot access real-world experience or common sense reasoning. This means that while they can generate knowledgeable and coherent text, they can also make mistakes or generate nonsensical or incorrect text.

What do AI language models do?

These models can perform a wide range of tasks, including:

  • Translation: AI language models can translate text from one language to another.
  • Question answering: Given a set of facts or a document to reference, these models can answer questions about that content.
  • Text generation: They can generate human-like text given a prompt. This can be used to write essays, create poetry, or even write code.
  • Text completion: AI language models can complete a given piece of text in a way that's consistent with the provided context.
  • Sentiment analysis: They can determine the sentiment expressed in a piece of text, such as whether a product review is positive or negative. Text summarisation: AI language models can produce a concise summary of a longer piece of text.

It's important to note that while AI language models can perform these tasks with high accuracy, they don't understand text in the same way humans do. They don't have beliefs, opinions, or desires. They generate text based on patterns they've learned during training.

Do people really need all these new era AI programmes?

Just as mentioned above, every person's needs can be of a different or very specific nature. Some people use their computers in order to compile complex spreadsheets for work, others use them for education, and others use them in order to have some fun while playing traditional video games or games like Minecraft or AoG Glorious Griffin.

When some of us are not spending time performing our regular computer activities or not participating in leisure activities like our favourite video or casino games, we occasionally use software that can make everyday life a little bit simpler and a little bit more practical.

Those activities, while mostly mind work, require a certain amount of time to complete and certain tasks that can seem laborious, like scrolling through sources to find answers or combining sources to create a fresh data set.

This is where language models are starting to cut their teeth in reducing humans' time to complete certain online tasks and thought work. Chat GPT is quickly becoming the software everyone is talking about, as everyone has a question that may require an on-the-spot answer, even when there is nobody around to ask.

Previously, that was the job of Google, but Chat GPT is slowly starting to capture this market.

How can you start using Chat GPT?

Starting to use this AI technology is relatively easy. Just like with many other online things, you will need to create an account in order to be able to use Chat GPT. You can do that by going to OpenAI and entering your email address or by mapping your Google or Microsoft account. After verifying your email, you will need to log in via the Chat GPT website.

Once you are in, you can simply ask your question using a couple of keywords, and the AI will do its magic and provide you with answers. On most occasions, the answers will be relatively accurate, but, as it often happens online, there is always a possibility of things not being done 100% correctly.

The Chat GPT AI has done really well up to now, but there is always room for improvement. OpenAI is continuously working on improving the engine by upgrading both its back-end as well as its front-end. These upgrades improve the AI's performance and increase its compatibility with the software that has incorporated Chat GPT's functionalities into their ecosystems.

For an AI technology currently in its infancy, Chat GPT has done wonders, and the fact that Microsoft decided to invest a huge amount of money in OpenAI, is not something that came as a surprise.

Investing in new technologies.

Artificial Intelligence is one of the five biggest tech world trends, and those pursuing a professional future in this field will have a very lucrative career ahead of them.

All major educational institutions are working on improving the availability of their tech faculties to be able to offer degree programs focusing on technological areas such as AI, Blockchain and Learning Management Systems.

Some of these programs are extremely demanding in terms of data needed and server costs. Still, AI companies feel they can monetise these tools eventually and in the end reward will be worth the time and the money you invested.
