6 Ways To Improve Your Dental Hygiene

05 January 2023 | 0 comments | Posted by Amy Jones in Doctors Orders

How to improve your dental health

The health of our teeth is an imperative part of living a happy and healthy life. Additionally to health, having a clean and fresh set of teeth serves as a benefit as to how others perceive you and your hygiene. Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between the healthiness of a person's mouth and their health as a whole.

If you have access to the supplies to keep your oral health maintained, or you can go to facilities to help, you should make this a priority if you have neglected your oral health.

Your teeth should be just as much a priority as your physical health; therefore, if you are looking for steps to improve your health, consider the following habits to ensure your teeth and gum health is maintained:

1. Brush the right way.

As the general rule says, you should always brush your teeth at least twice a day. If you are bad at maintaining this habit right now, challenge yourself to make brushing your teeth the first thing you do when you wake up and the last thing you do before you sleep. Brushing well and reaching all surfaces for at least two minutes is a good rule to stick to.

2. Get the right tools.

If you have been brushing your teeth for a sufficient amount of time and are still not seeing oral improvement, perhaps it is time to upgrade your tools. Surprisingly, it is advised that you should change your toothbrush every three months to ensure that the bristles still are firm enough to scrub all the bacteria off.

If you have not changed your toothbrush for a while, it is time to make a swap. Additionally, the toothpaste you use can make a huge difference in the quality of your clean. It might feel daunting to choose what brand when there are now thousands of different types of toothpaste that promise different effects but keep things simple. Find a fluoride toothpaste, as fluoride is known for preventing tooth decay and tooth plaque.

3. Floss once a day.

Whilst it is not normal etiquette to brush your teeth in public at any given moment, flossing is a really valuable way to keep your teeth clean and prevent the likely hood of plaque buildup. You should keep floss handy with you throughout the day. Try to floss after any invasive meals or just whenever you find the time, and flossing is also known to prevent inflammation within your gum areas.

4. Don't overdo it.

Now you have your new toothbrush and have started your habit of flossing, it is also important not to overbrush. Brushing too hard can become abrasive for your teeth and can lead to the breakdown of your enamel. This, therefore, will lead to high levels of sensitivity. As a result, so keep things firm, but also don't try to scrub your gums to the bone!

5. Reduce sugar intake.

Sugar is one of the most common causes of cavities, and the health of your mouth and teeth can be detrimentally affected if you consume too much sugar. The acid that lingers in your mouth is a result of sugar, and this essentially will lead to the erosion of your enamel. If you wish to see dramatic improvements in your dental hygiene, you should reduce your sugar intake. We do not suggest cutting out sugar altogether; however, be conscious of how much you consume daily.

6. Visit the dentist regularly.

You may have felt more inclined to visit the dentist when you were younger and left with a tasty lollipop; however, as an adult, there is less incentive and more expense. Of course, visiting the dentist can feel like a tedious task. However, if you want to maintain your dental health, you should go for regular checkups. It's recommended that you should attend a routine checkup at least every six months, and if between this time you experience problems, you should get it checked straight away. The best prevention method is to spot early signs of issues and get them seen straight away.

Dental hygiene benefits

If dental hygiene is not already a habitual part of your routine and you still are not conceived of its value, here are some of the key benefits of good oral health:

  • Lower risk of mouth cancers
  • Fresh breath
  • Reduced risk of emergency dental visits
  • Lower risk of other health concerns like diabetes
  • Confident smile
  • Reduced requirements for dental work, such as full dental implants

Final thoughts

Great oral health will visibly improve how your gums and teeth feel and look. Ensure that you implement the suggested habits whilst seeking professional health advice from your dentist if you are experiencing any troubling problems. It is never too late to start making your oral health optimal.
