What Are The Benefits Of The Greywater System?
03 February 2023 | 0 comments | Posted by Kyle Moore in Constructive Criticism
Plumbing is necessary for modern homes, and many of us take for granted the ease of access to water we have today, but with ease of access also comes responsibility and using our resources wisely. It can seem like there is an endless supply of water, given your ability to open a tap, but this isn't always true. Many cities, as they grow, have seen their water levels lowered, and if lack of rainfall does not restore previous levels, consumption habits need to change.
One way of reducing consumption is through greywater, which repurposes water for different uses.
What is greywater?
Greywater is described as used water or wastewater that comes from sources such as the bathroom, kitchen and laundry.
It is relatively clean and cannot be compared with the water from toilets (blackwater). Generally, any water that is drained from the house other than toilet water can be described as greywater.
Greywater is not always grey in colour, and it may also contain traces of food, grease, hair, dirt or particular household cleaning products. As much as it may look dirty, greywater can be reused for other purposes and does not necessarily have to be disposed of into the sewage system as other types of wastewater do.
Uses of Greywater System
Greywater solutions are becoming more popular as people become more aware of the benefits of using recycled water in their homes. All the used water except the sewage water is grey water.
However, it is relatively cleaner than the water used in the toilet. Greywater is a general term for any drained water from the home except toilet water. Additionally, it might have residue from certain home cleaning products, food, grease, hair, or dirt.
Greywater can be reused, even though it may appear nasty. It is a resource that may be put to safe and advantageous purposes like watering gardens.
Benefits of Greywater System
A greywater system is an eco-friendly solution. You can use it for irrigation. We will discuss some benefits of having a greywater system for your home.
1. Prevents Water Wastage
Using a greywater recycling system reduces water consumption by half. We all know that water is a valuable resource for us. It is a resource that must be preserved for future generations, and the best way to achieve that is to recycle greywater.
Utilising a greywater system can help you make changes and progress that benefit both you and the environment.
2. It is Cost-Effective
In the unlikely event that your water usage is being excessively taxed, installing a greywater recycling system will result in a 50% reduction in your water bill. It is highly cost-effective and helps save you big bucks. It significantly reduces the need for fresh water.
3. Less Water is Delivered to Sewage Facilities
Depending on where you live, using a greywater recycling system can prevent sewage from entering conduits untreated. A few urban areas are making great efforts to keep up with the needs of their sewage system. Untreated wastewater is thus seen to collect in areas where no one needs it.
4. Reduced pressure on other resources
When cities reuse water in mass and reduce the consumption of fresh water, it requires public utilities to expend less energy to pump the required water into their home. That means electricity is made available that would otherwise go towards water pumps and can be used by others for economic activity.
Secondly, water reuse reduces the load that treatment centres have to handle in ensuring that it is purified, thus reducing the total energy required by both water distribution and sewage purifying companies. By sending less waste water their way and allowing greywater to clear naturally, we reduce the amount of volume pushed through treatment plants and reduce their energy demands, as well as a reduction in chemicals needed to treat water.
5. Maximise the use of nutrients.
The water we use in the kitchen to prepare food or our bathwater contains a lot of organic material that is not harmful to plants. Plant and animal materials contain valuable nutrients for the soul and can be found in greywater. The use of greywater reintroduces nutrients that would have otherwise been lost to the sewage system and allows the circle of life to continue as it has for millennia.
6. Groundwater replenishment
The nutrients sucked up by plants, soil and bugs get filtered from the greywater, and what is not evaporated moves down and ends up in the groundwater, replenishing the levels therein.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are you still looking for more info? We've compiled a list of FAQs – Check them out.
1. How Long Can Greywater Be Stored?
Untreated greywater is not restored for more than 24 hours. Doing so will encourage the growth of microorganisms. There should be no more than 80 litres should be in your surge tank.
2. What Are The Effects Of Greywater On The Environment?
If enough individuals make the same decision, the amount of freshwater needed to flush toilets and water plants can be dramatically reduced, which will positively affect the environment. In areas with arid climates or experiencing droughts, this is especially essential.
