How CBD Is Helpful For Keeping You Fit
06 July 2020 | 0 comments | Posted by Jessica K in Athletes
Cannabidiol (CBD) needs no introduction. It is one of the more than 130 cannabinoids that researchers have identified in the cannabis plant. For some time now, CBD has been used to treat and manage a wide range of medical conditions, particularly diseases that are symptomised by pain.
Though CBD has been a popular supplement in the health and wellness industry, the fitness space has also recently incorporated this therapeutic extract. Professional athletes and fitness freaks can now integrate cannabidiol into their routines for optimised workouts.
Read further to find out how CBD can help you keep fit.
What Makes Cannabidiol So Popular?
One of the reasons medical experts recommend CBD is due to its non-psychoactive nature. Unlike its cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is neither psychoactive nor intoxicating. CBD’s non-psychoactive nature makes it incredibly easy for users to monitor their recovery process.
Another thing to love about cannabidiol is that there is no ideal dosage. That explains why medical experts can only recommend and not prescribe the substance. For the most part, users have to start low, then work their way up until they establish an ideal dosage.
How does CBD improve your fitness results?
CBD treats pain
Pain is part of any workout and one of the main conditions that medical experts recommend cannabidiol to treat. Generally, CBD treats pain by positively impacting the various functions of your endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The ECS refers to a system that’s made up of endogenous cannabinoids and endocannabinoid receptors. The endocannabinoid system regulates your body’s healthy homeostatic balance, and pain relief is one of its core functions. To boost the pain-relieving ability of your endocannabinoid system, CBD interacts with various endocannabinoid receptors in a manner that enhances cell-signalling between these receptors and your endogenous cannabinoids.
Studies have cited CBD’s role in increasing the levels of anandamide. Anandamide is one of the endogenous cannabinoids that play a crucial role in pain relief, and its low levels have been associated with an increase in pain sensations. CBD boosts anandamide levels indirectly, such as by inhibiting the activity of enzymes that digest this chemical, such as fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH).
Still, on relieving workout-related pain, CBD reduces Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness (DOMS). This is the muscle pain and soreness that usually sets in about 24 hours after engaging in a strenuous exercise. By relieving DOMS, CBD ensures that you can follow through with your workouts without experiencing downtimes.
CBD relieves anxiety
Anxiety is another common medical condition that cannabidiol can treat. One of the best things about CBD for anxiety is that it can manage all of the five anxiety disorders. Those include Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), Panic Disorder (PD), and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
So, consuming cannabidiol before your workout will go a long way in banishing your anxiety for good. Of course, you must ensure that you use CBD products by reputable brands like CBDfx UK.
Now, you may be wondering how being anxiety-free improves your workout results. Well, it’s challenging to focus on your workouts with racing thoughts in your mind or butterflies in your stomach. And a lack of mental focus is one of the leading causes of workout-related accidents. CBD Boosts Your Energy
You probably already know that you require adequate amounts of energy for better workout results. You may also already know that much of that energy comes from the food that you eat. However, if you’re a professional trainer, you may find some of the food supplements (that you’re not used to) to be a little uncomfortable and may cause nausea.
Thankfully, you can use CBD to relieve the feelings of nausea. That way, you get to enjoy your energy supplements even if such foods are not necessarily savoury.
Another way to your energy levels for optimised workouts is to insist on full-spectrum CBD. Full-spectrum CBD refers to CBD products that are formulated with the therapeutic CBD, psychoactive THC, and other cannabinoids.
THC is a stimulant at low doses and a sedative at high doses. So, the THC in full-spectrum CBD works as a stimulant, giving you bursts of energy to keep going with your workouts. On the other hand, CBD modulates the effects of THC, ensuring that you don’t become sedated during your workouts.
CBD manages inflammation
Just like pain, inflammation is inseparable from workouts. Strenuous workouts cause microscopic tears in your body’s muscles and tissues. When that happens, inflammation occurs, and as a result, it triggers your body’s natural repair processes.
The body deploys its own defence mechanisms to try and get your tissues and muscles back in shape.
When the inflammation becomes too much, it can lead to muscle fatigue, resulting in inferior workouts. One fundamental way to keep workout-induced inflammation in check is to integrate cannabidiol into your exercise routine.
CBD manages inflammation by lowering your body’s inflammatory messenger activity. Indeed, cannabidiol has shown tremendous results with inflammatory conditions like cancer and acne.
One of the reasons CBD is preferable for workouts compared to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, is that cannabidiol doesn’t present any side effects. In the event of side effects, they are usually mild and short-lasting.
CBD penetrates transdermally to alleviate workout-induced inflammation. Remember, NSAIDs must be broken down by your body, and in the process, they could cause damage to your liver or kidney.
CBD improves your sleep
Sleep is an essential physiological process, especially for professional athletes. It is during sleep that your body fully repairs itself to get ready for the day ahead. But according to the Cleveland Clinic, about 70 million Americans suffer from one form of sleep disorder.
Fortunately, this is another area that CBD can help with its range of relaxing properties. Cannabidiol relieves insomnia by treating some of its symptoms, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, pain, and anxiety.
Another way CBD treats insomnia is by eliminating the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase of sleep. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) is the stage during sleep where you experience the most dreams. Dreams typically interfere with your ability to have a sound and productive sleep. So, by erasing REM, you dreamless and sleep more.
Conclusion
The fact that CBD can help to optimise your workouts is beyond doubt. It can treat various problems associated with rigorous workouts, including pain, inflammation, and muscle soreness. Most importantly, CBD does not come with the common side effects that are experienced with various conventional performance enhancement drugs.
